A Stampede of Horns and Shields

by Carnotaurus

/
1.
Lighting strikes and thunder roars across Cretaceous skies Which open up to unleash an unforgiving storm The grazing Centrosaurus herd, battered by the downpour, Startled by the lightning and the crash of falling trees Herd communication has hopelessly shut down As pure instinct takes over they begin to stampede Trying in vain to outrun the storm The dirt of the open plains turns to mud beneath their feet Entering the forest Leading with their horns Plant and animal alike Trampled underfoot Mammals fall from the trees Impaled on Centrosaurus horns As the rain intensifies they come upon a raging river The storm rages on as the river starts to flood Despite the rising water the herd does not relent Hundreds of Centrosaurs attempt to cross the waters The old and the sick have no hope of keeping up Gripped in panic, losing sight of their destination So many injured by the shields and horns of others Or trapped behind a wall of their fellow Ceratopids Pushed beneath the surface, crushed as they drown At the other side Most of the herd is dead The lucky and the strong Heave themselves to shore Only to encounter the mighty Albertasaurus Stalking the boneyard with hunger in it's eyes
